Maungarongo Wetland Restoration Project
A project to restore the abandoned oxbow of the Waipaoa River, in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa. The oxbow covers an area of 44 hectares, being approximately 4.5 kilometres in length and 100 metres wide and is a natural habitat to a range of native flora and fauna.
Once part of a flowing river system highly valued to the tangata whenua of the district, Te Maungarongo has become an extensive and varied wetland environment amidst an intensive horticultural landscape. Maungarongo was recently returned to Ngā Uri o Te Kooti Rikirangi who aspire to restore the wetland to a world class indigenous wetland environment. The wetland includes a wet Kahikatea forest, and is a habitat for the Matuku bird.
